GENERAL EDUCATION: This course does not fulfill a General Education requirement.

DESCRIPTION: For those with little or no sewing experience. Students will learn the application of construction principles from commercial patterns in making apparel. Emphasis will be on basic construction techniques and fundamental fitting. Materials approximately $50 or more.
TAUGHT: Fall, Winter
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Patterns and pattern companies; Body measurements; Pattern alterations; The sewing machine; Grain of Fabric; Seams and seam finishes; Fabric preparation for cutting; Cutting and marking; Construction techniques; Stay stitching; Buttonholes and buttons; Lapped zippers; Hems; Fasteners; Waistbands; Collars; Sleeves; Elastic casing; Darts
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. Demonstrate proper construction techniques.
2. Follow instructions, both written and oral.
3. Use correct terminology in relationship to sewing construction.
4. Derive solutions to construction problems.
5. Recognize high and poor quality in clothing construction.
6. Build confidence in ability to construct and teach basic sewing techniques.
REQUIREMENTS: Seven sets of samples of sewing techniques; Pillowcase with continuous bias strip trim; Elastic waist trousers; Skirt with waistband and lapped zipper; Camp shirt with collar, darts, set-in sleeves, buttons and buttonholes.
