GENERAL EDUCATION: This course fulfills a General Education - Reading & Writing requirement.
DESCRIPTION: Focuses on the development of proficient college writing. Emphasizes the composing process, expository and argumentative discourse, research and documentation. Requires essays totaling 5,000 words of drafted and edited prose. (Intended for Honors Program students.)
TAUGHT: No regular offering.
CONTENT AND TOPICS: The writing process; rhetorical aims and strategies; audience awareness; research and documentation; style, editing.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. Incorporating the writing process: prewriting, drafting, responding, revising, and editing.
  2. Writing papers illustrating varied aims: informing, evaluating, persuading.
  3. Understanding, in both writing and reading, rhetorical modes including narration, description, process, classification, comparison, causal analysis, definition.
  4. Understanding an author's audience, purpose, main point, and organization.
  5. Researching with an understanding of library sources, data bases, and web resources.
  6. Distinguishing among primary and secondary sources and effective use of quotation, paraphrase, and summary.
  7. Documenting sources according to an acceptable style sheet, such as MLA and APA.
REQUIREMENTS: Expository and argumentative essays totaling 5,000 words of drafted and edited prose.
