| DESCRIPTION: |
Emphasizes writing expository and argumentative essays and the literal, analytical, and critical interpretation of college-level reading. Requires analytical essays including summaries, a research paper, critical analyses, and arguments totaling 8,000-10,000 words of edited and documented prose. (Intended for Honors Program students.) |

| CONTENT AND TOPICS: |
Reading complex texts confidently; strategies for critical thinking; the writing process including invention, synthesis, revision; research and documentation, argumentation; style and editing. |
| GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: |
- Learning a method for analyzing and summarizing complex texts.
- Drawing inferences from data and recognizing patterns among data.
- Understanding the distinctions between strong and weak arguments.
- Becoming familiar with the form of classical argument.
- Learning a strategy for major-specific research and documentation.
- Writing papers (summaries, syntheses, critiques, analyses, and arguments) that demonstrate the successful application of those skills enumerated above.
