DESCRIPTION: An introduction to the design and development of multi-tier web based applications. An overview of the architecture for multi-tier web applications is covered with a focus on the presentation layer. Applications will be built to generate dynamic web pages and deployed to a web application server. Students registering for this class must also register for the corresponding lab (IS 400L) that goes with this course. See the class schedule for the specific section to register for.

CONTENT AND TOPICS:

  • Investigations of commonly used models for multi-tiered application development

  • Develop XHTML and JSP web pages and java Servlets that interact with multiple types of data storage media

  • Implementation of tools for multi-tiered development

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. Develop java-based web applications and test them in a stand-alone environment prior to deploying them to a production environment.

  2. Develop applications using both model 1 and CVM models.

  3. Develop applications from both guided-practice and self-directed modes.

REQUIREMENTS: Complete chapter examples and exercises as homework, all applications must be tested locally prior to deployment to the production server. Develop a self-developed web application with approval of the professor. Present applications and demonstrate CVM model compliance and operability.
