|DESCRIPTION:||A course designed to introduce the student to the principles of lighting design, lighting systems, light sources, communication of lighting design and specification, and practical application of learned principles in project format.|
|CONTENT AND TOPICS:||Principles of electricity; electrical distribution; history of electricity; light & color; color psychology; incandescent lighting; tungsten halogen lighting; low voltage lighting; fluorescent lighting; compact fluorescent; hot & cold cathode; HID (high intensity discharge); mercury vapor lighting; metal halide lighting; HPS (high pressure sodium); low pressure sodium; ambient lighting; task lighting; accent lighting; fiber optics; five exams; Jewelry Store lighting design project; portfolio lighting design project.|
|GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:||At the conclusion of this course, the student will:
1. Identify lighting principles and vocabulary.
2. Identify lighting systems orally and by examination.
3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of lighting specification for practical use in project format.
4. Demonstrate the use of various lighting design
techniques for residential and contract installations through oral presentation and project format.
5. Recognize "daylighting" as a means of energy conservation.
6. Compile a file and properly label lighting applications and information.
7. Demonstrate knowledge of lighting principles by written examination.
8. Recognize how building systems affect lighting design application through adherence to project programming.
|REQUIREMENTS:||1. Each student will read and analyze one research article from journals or lighting magazines. The library should be used for this research as well. The report will be presented in class orally and in written form. Select a topic that coincides with information being presented in class.
2. Each student will organize a Lighting Resource File (in a three ring binder) with magazine photos, lighting, research articles, resource lists, and bibliographies, and class notes. This should be used as a resource in the future.
3. Students will complete one conceptual presentation of assigned project.
4. Each student will select one project from his/her portfolio and rework the lighting design. A notebook with the lighting specs in clear covers will be required.
5. Each student will be required to take five (5) exams to test understanding and comprehension of material presented.
6. Homework assignments at the discretion of the
instructor will be required.
