GENERAL EDUCATION: This course does not fulfill a General Education requirement.

DESCRIPTION: Continuation of M156. Further development of basic piano technique, including the following:
Play major scales in eighth notes at 120 beats per minute. Play I IV 16/4 V7 I progression in all major/minor keys in 90 seconds for each set. Play all major/minor arpeggios in triplets at 60 beats per minute. Play improvised and prepared accompaniments.

CONTENT AND TOPICS: Class activities are designed to instruct and clarify concepts in preparation for performance and written examinations.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. Play major scales in eighth notes at 120 beats per minute.
2. Play I IV 16/4 V7 progression in all major/minor keys in 90 seconds for each set.
3. Play all major/minor arpeggios in triplets at 60 beats per minute.
4. Play improvised and prepared accompaniments.
REQUIREMENTS: a. Develop enough skill at the keyboard to prepare a simple accompaniment to a band piece, choral piece, or art song with 24 hours preparation. (This requirement is part of methods courses.)
b. Play major scales in eighth notes at 120 beats per minute.
c. Play I IV 16/4 V7 I progression in all major and minor keys in 90 seconds for each set.
d. Play all major and minor arpeggios in triplets at 60 beats per minute.
e. Create an improvised two-handed accompaniment to a given melody or folk song.
f. Be able to read and realize simple symbols to accompany a melody. This could include all triads, dominant, diminished, and minor sevenths.

PREREQUISITES: Piano 156 (Basic Piano Skills 1) or equivalent training (easy two-hand folk tunes, simple I, IV, V7 accompaniments, "Hymns Made Simple").
