| DESCRIPTION: | A one semester course presenting the history and general musical styles of western (European) music from Greek/Roman times through the mid-18th century and the relationship of the music to the political, social, and religious environment in which these musical styles developed. Includes study of the musical genres of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and Baroque Periods. | ||

| GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: | Know the basic tools, both musical and extra-musical, to more accurately appreciate, analyze, discuss, and perform any given piece of music reflective of the periods and genres studied. | ||
| REQUIREMENTS: | Varies depending on the instructor. Generally there will be a series of three or four two-day exams, each consisting of four major components: Short Answer, Multiple Choice, Essay, and Aural Recognition. The final exam is also comprehensive. Attendance is not considered as a grading component. | ||
