|DESCRIPTION:||A one-semester course exploring choral literature and choral programming, primarily focusing on music for secondary school choirs.|
|CONTENT AND TOPICS:||Survey of the standard choral repertoire, evaluating music and identifying its worthiness and expressive qualities, identification of resources for further research of repertoire, programming considerations, adaptation of existing works for small or inexperienced ensembles.|
|GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:||1. Learn to select and/or adapt appropriate choral literature for use by secondary school choir, based on level, makeup, and group learning needs.
2. Become familiar with choral music of all style periods from Gregorian chant to contemporary.
3. Develop a personal philosophy of programming.
4. Create a personal library and catalogue of appropriate music.
5. Become familiar with choral music resources and use them to select appropriate music.
|REQUIREMENTS:||Students will be required to read and evaluate large amounts of music outside of class. They will also prepare sample choral programs for various types of ensembles.
|PREREQUISITES:||Junior status; successful completion of Music 256, 294, and 296.|
|OTHER:||This course may include an on-line component.|
