|DESCRIPTION:||Class Piano Instruction: Level 1 is a course designed for the beginning piano student. A prior background in music is not required, but is helpful. Success in the class requires regular practice. Five hours practice per week is required for an "A" grade. At the end of the class student will be able to play hymns from the "Hymns Made Easy" (green, spiral-bound book).
If you can play the standard hymns you should take M158A (Private piano lessons for non-piano majors) (required fee).
|CONTENT AND TOPICS:||Class activities prepare students for performance and written examinations.|
|GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:||1. Identify and play musical pitches on staff and keyboard.
2. Identify and play primary chords (I, IV, V) in selected keys.
3. Identify and play simple intervals.
4. Sight read simple pieces with both hands.
5. Clap and play basic note values and rhythmic patterns.
6. Identify and apply basic musical terms.
|REQUIREMENTS:||Varies according to instructor. Generally there are weekly performing examinations with some written examinations. Practicing and attendance are required.
|PREREQUISITES:||The course is a prerequisite for Music 107 (Level 2) and Music 108 (Level 3) class piano instruction.|
