Swimming Beginning

GENERAL EDUCATION: This course fulfills a General Education - Basic Skills requirement.

DESCRIPTION: To instruct students in basic swimming skills and strokes.
TAUGHT: Winter, Summer, Fall
CONTENT AND TOPICS: A beginning swimming class designed to instruct students in basic swimming skills and strokes to introduce them and help them become comfortable with being in water.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: The student will:
1. Learn and exhibit knowledge of skill of beginning swimming
2. Learn and exhibit knowledge of terminology, rules, safety practices, and correct fundamentals of swimming strokes and breathing
3. Pass all requirements as outlined in Learn to Swim, Level 5 of American Red Cross
4. Show swimming proficiency in front crawl, elementary back stroke, side stroke, elementary stroke, breast stroke, and the back crawl.
5. Exhibit ability to perform open turns, enter deep water in sitting dive from desk, kneeling dive from deck, standing from deck (one leg back), and a standing dive from both feet on deck
6. Float prone and on back and scull
7. Pass 15 minute endurance swim
REQUIREMENTS: The student will:
1. Learn through demonstrations,lecture, and drills
2. Attend class and participate
3. Take skill tests, stroke tests, Red Cross Tests, and written quizzes
4. Be a beginning swimmer
5. Pass written exams
OTHER: BYU-I approved clothing required
