|DESCRIPTION:||An advanced course in the study of policy formulation, government actions, societal and environmental issues, and programs that influence the agricultural sectors of production, marketing, and finances.|
|CONTENT AND TOPICS:||The establishment of trade policy both domestically and internationally for food and fiber products. Issues related to GATT and NAFTA as well as other trade policy and agreements between production and marketing areas of the nation and world.
* Setting the need for policy, the farm problem. * The process of policy, policy setting and policy problems.
* The policy process, policy interest groups (PAC's).
* International Trade and Macro Policy World Food Problems.
* The role of trade.
* International trade and market development policy.
* The macroeconoics of agriculture.
* Domestic farm policy: a historical perspective.
* Contemporary options for domestic farm policy. * The structure of agriclture.
* Resource policy.
* Food price policy.
* Nutrition, food safety, and food quality.
* Rural development policy.
* Impact of agricultural and food policy on agribusiness.
|GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:||1. Understand the role of politics in the policy making process.
2. Understand that policy may have simple goals but complex results.
3. Analyze strengths and weaknesses of agricultural policy programs.
4. Communicate their policy views orally and in writing.
5. Make business and operational adjustments in the farm and farm related business in order to gain maximum efficiency within the framework of existing government agricultural policy.
6. Understand the impact of U.S. policies on global markets, prices, supply and demand.
