Introduction to Film Art and Analysis

GENERAL EDUCATION: This course fulfills a General Education - Arts requirement.

DESCRIPTION: Developing analytical skills for understanding and appreciating the best of motion picture art; basic history, theory, and aesthetics of film.
TAUGHT: Winter, Summer, Fall
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Film analysis, censorship and other forces, fictional and dramatic elements, visual design and color, editing and special effects, sound, music, acting, directing, adaptations and genres, foreign films, silent films, documentaries, animated films, personal criteria for viewing films.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Develop standards and values for selecting films to see, as well as for evaluating the judging those films. Understand with appreciation and sensitivity a few great films and express this knowledge in written and oral communication. Demonstrate a knowledge and ability to speak and write using the vocabulary of film. Develop a framwork of principles and values for selecting evaluating films for personal viewing. Broaden student's perspectives of other cultures through the art forms of film. Write/speak knowledgably about the: technical aspects of film moral values/implications thematic elements.
REQUIREMENTS: Enroll in TA 117L, which requires meeting once a week to view a feature film and take a short quiz. LAB IS MANDATORY.
Complete Directed Studies weekly by viewing a film at the McKay Library (times listed on syllabus) and filling out a worksheet related to that film.
Complete major written assignments as required by individual instructors.
Quizzes given on reading assignments.
Subjective and objective final examinations.

OTHER: This course approaches filmmaking from a theoretical and analytical perspective. Students wishing to experience filmmaking hands-on should contact the Communications department and/or the BYU-Idaho Student Film Makers Club.
