|DESCRIPTION:||Concentrated practical work with textual analysis, emotional, physical characterization, staging/blocking techniques, types of progression in songs, auditioning, and centering the dramatic focus within a song.This course fosters specific and unique creation of character by performers while singing. Two distinctive methodologies for analyzing, interpreting, staging and performing solos and audition material are taught and refined.|

|CONTENT AND TOPICS:||Dramatic context; operative structure, paraphrasing; subtexting; focal language; Fred Silver's acting techniques: passive, active, stage directions and dramatic monologue/counterpoint.|
|GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:||Develop a unique format for interpreting any song by combining techniques taught in class.
Master staging methods, learn textual analysis approaches, and engage in practical experiences to heighten and refine abilities.
|REQUIREMENTS:||Regular attendance for studio sessions is required. Four or five written exams will cover lecture and reading materials. Students are expected to meet with a rehearsal accompanist outside of class approximately thirty minutes each week to refine preparation of performance material.|
|PREREQUISITES:||None, but if you do not read music, passing the class will be extremely difficult.|
