GENERAL EDUCATION: This course does not fulfill a General Education requirement.

DESCRIPTION: A basic course in vascular plant classification, systematics, and nomenclature, including a survey of common or important vascular plant families, with emphasis on flowering plants and the local flora. Students will also learn the skills necessary for plant identification.
TAUGHT: 1st Summer, Fall
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Systematics, taxonomy, classification, botanical nomenclature, identification, using keys, vascular plant diversity, herbarium use and collection techniques, nomenclatural types, and vegetative terminology.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Students will gain an understanding and appreciation of the phylogenetic relationships within the plant kingdom, how plants are classified, the skills and techniques needed for plant identification, and the characteristics of various vascular plant families.
REQUIREMENTS: Attend classes and labs, collect and identify local plants, construct an identification key, complete quizzes and exams.
PREREQUISITES: BIO 208 or consent of the instructor
