DESCRIPTION: Principles, processes and methodology of molecular and cell biology. Interactions at the cellular level including: structure and function of membranes, organelles and cytoskeletal elements; energy metabolism, signal transduction, cell cycle, gene expression, cell-cell communication and cellular movement. growth and physiology of organisms used in molecular biology.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
•Examine the elementary principles of basic biochemistry and bioenergetics.
•Review the methodologies employed in the study of molecular and cellular biology.
•Examine the properties that are common to most eucaryotic cells including the cellular and molecular building blocks in a structure/function relationship.
•Define the principles of expression and transmission of genetic information including chemical and physical properties of proteins and nucleic acids. Structure, cloning, and analysis of DNA; biosynthesis and processing of RNA; biosynthesis, purification, structure, and analysis of proteins; correlation of structure and biological properties.
•Discuss the properties and regulation of the cell cycle; chromosomes and DNA repair; cell transformation and apoptosis; molecular aspects of development, differentiation, and cancer.
•Examine the behavior of cells in multicellular organisms including the characteristics of cell to cell communication, receptor systems, signal transduction, protein sorting and transport across cell membranes, extracellular matrix and cell motility.
REQUIREMENTS: Grade is based on performance on lecture exams, lab exams and written assignments
