DESCRIPTION: An introduction overview course covering the history, vocabulary, basic operating principles, modes of travel, destination geography, business and career opportunities governing the national and international travel, tourism, and hospitality industry.

CONTENT AND TOPICS: An introduction overview course covering the history, vocabulary, basic operating principles, modes of travel, destination geography, business and career opportunities governing the national and international travel, tourism, and hospitality industry.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: 1. Identify major historical events and characters which have had a profound effect upon the development of the travel industry.

2. Define basic vocabulary and terms used in the travel industry.

3. Describe psychological theories of human motivation relevant in the travel industry.

4. Identify major sources of information for travel professionals.

5. Identify major cities, states, and countries on a world map.

6. Identify and discuss important regional sightseeing attractions in the United States.

7. Identify popular worldwide tourist destinations.

8. Identify and discuss map terminology, and differences between weather and climate.

9. Explain and discuss the basic air travel systems used in the U.S. and the World.

10. Identify and explain basic airplane and airport nomenclature.

11. Discuss the basic rules, time calculations, and cautions related to international travel.

12. Discuss the development, operating principles, and comparisons of national and international rail transportation systems.

13. Compare and calculate the costs and operating principles related to car, recreational vehicle, and alternate forms of ground travel for business and family traveling.

14. Discuss and compare the benefits and operating procedures of cruise travel on the national and international waterways of the world.

15. Identify the various nomenclature of the cruise ship.

16. Distinguish among the various types of hospitality properties.

17. Discuss the various management principles governing the operation and marketing of hospitality consumer products.

18. Create and organize a plan for their own model hospitality product.

19. Discuss and differentiate the various components of a typical tour package.

20. Create and present to the class a professional tour package based on real travel schedules, travel modes, accommodations, etc.

21. Investigate and report on current trends and career opportunities in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry.

22. Identify regional and national colleges/universities which offer professional degrees in the travel, tourism, and hospitality management.

23. Identify classes required in a two and four year degree course of study in the travel, tourism, and hospitality programs.

24. Solve case study problems related to customer service in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry.

25. Identify and discuss at least three current entrepreneurial opportunities available in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industry.
