| DEPARTMENT: | CHEMISTRY | ||
| GENERAL EDUCATION: | This course does not fulfill a General Education requirement. | ||
| DESCRIPTION: | Laboratory exercises in the preparation and purification of inorganic compounds. Exposure to advanced synthetic techniques including vacuum lines, Schlenk manipulations, and tube furnace reactions. Characterization by modern spectroscopic techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance, cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis, infrared, and magnetic susceptibility. | ||
| TAUGHT: | Fall | ||
| CONTENT AND TOPICS: | Synthesis and characterization of coordination complexes (including organometallic), solid-state compounds, and bioinorganic compounds. | ||
| GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: | Prepare, purify, and characterize inorganic compounds using modern techniques in inorganic chemistry that include the following: 1)Organometallic complexes. 2)Coordination compounds. 3)Solid-state compounds. 4)Bioinorganic compounds. Operate modern inorganic instrumentation to characterize synthesized inorganic compounds that include the following: 1)Infrared spectroscopy. 2)UV-vis spectroscopy. 3)NMR spectroscopy. 4)Magnetic susceptibility. Record results of syntheses in laboratory notebooks using proper record-keeping procedures. |
