Introduction
Influencing  people's  lives  for  the  better  is  one  of  the  satisfactions  of  teaching.    Education,  above  all  other  professions,  allows  you  to  share  yourself  with  others  as  you  help  them  grow,  learn,  mature,  and  identify  that  which  will  have  a  lasting  impact  for  good  throughout  their  lives.

The  Elementary  Education  Department  offers  a  Bachelor  of  Science  Degree  with  a  major  in  Elementary  Education.    Students  will  be  exposed  to  a  strong  theoretical  knowledge  base  with  extensive  practical  experience  in  the  public  schools.    Students  successfully  completing  the  program  will  be  eligible  to  apply  for  a  K-8  Idaho  Education  Teaching  Credential.

Entrance Requirements
To  enroll  in  the  Professional  Teacher  Education  Core,  students  must  have  completed  15  credit  hours  and  meet  at  least  one  of  the  following  criteria:
  •   ACT  composite  of  22  or
  •   GPA  of  2.75  in  the  last  semester  completed.

After  matriculation,  students  will  be  required  to  maintain  a  2.75  GPA  throughout  the  program.    Students  must  receive  a  C-  or  higher  on  all  general  education  and  major  courses.    Students  must  also  successfully  pass  the  following  exams  before  student  teaching:
  •   Idaho  Literacy  Exam
  •   Idaho  Technology  Competency
  •   Praxis  II

  • Teacher Education Vision Statement
Through  a  variety  of  courses  and  field  experiences,  the  Department  of  Elementary  Education  seeks  to  assist  its  majors  in  becoming  Professional  Teachers.    It  is  our  belief  that  teacher  candidates  should  simultaneously  draw  upon  content  area  knowledge,  professional  understanding,  and  practical  wisdom  to  facilitate  teaching  and  learning.    We  have  divided  the  courses  recommended  and/or  required  by  the  Department  of  Elementary  Education  at  BYU-Idaho  into  three  broad  categories  that  would  help  students  become  1)  Evolving  Learners,  2)  Developing  Professionals,  and  3)  Emerging  Practitioners.    We  have  defined  those  terms  as  follows:

Evolving  Learner:    The  teacher  candidate  understands  the  central  concepts,  the  tools  of  inquiry,  and  the  structures  of  the  disciplines  taught;  comprehends  the  interdisciplinary  nature  of  the  real-world  and  the  role  of  the  disciplines  in  preparing  students  for  the  global  community  of  the  future;  and  demonstrates  competency  in  multiple  assessments  made  at  appropriate  transition  points  before  program  completion.

Developing  Professional:  The  teacher  candidate  seeks  personal,  spiritual,  and  professional  growth  in  harmony  with  the  BYU-Idaho  Honor  Code;  comprehends  children's  needs;  understands  how  students  learn  and  develop;  observes  teacher-student  interactions;  possesses  a  broad  range  of  communication  and  technology  skills  for  use  with  students,  colleagues,  parents,  and  the  community;  and  represents  the  ideals  and  ethics  embraced  by  local,  state,  and  national  teaching  organizations.

Emerging  Practitioner:  The  teacher  candidate  plans  for  instruction;  has  annual,  practical  experiences  in  a  variety  of  diverse  settings;  demonstrates  competency  with  multiple  teaching  strategies;  manages  and  monitors  successful  student  learning  in  a  safe  and  positive  environment  (with  respect  for  diverse  needs);  and  constantly  reflects  upon  and  improves  instructional  skills.

Student Teaching is the culminating experience, the capstone of the academic and professional training of a pre-service teacher. A sixteen-week practicum is completed in the public school classroom. A weekly seminar will serve as the forum in which student teachers can address challenges and concerns while sharing experiences, expertise, and successes. Please be aware of the vast number of education students that BYU-Idaho is trying to service. Because of this, be aware of the following: 1. There is a STRONG probability that your student-teaching placement will be a distant site. (Tacoma, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Mesa, etc.) 2. Distant-site placements are limited to certain locations that have been organized for BYU-Idaho students. These sites have been researched and contacts made in order to help BYU-Idaho students gain a student-teaching experience. 3. There will be a disruption in your regular routine in order to participate in your student-teaching experience. You may need to move to a new area and re-establish your "home". This may require your purchasing new items that deem necessary. Also be aware that there may be additional expenses in transportation, housing, food, and utilities involved in your distant-site placement. 4. If you are in a campus-based placement, there will most likely be significant commuting for many of you. 5. There will be some unanticipated program expenses that develop through the program such as Praxis PLT, fingerprinting, and/or background checks. These are expenses that are not BYU-Idaho based, but mandated by school districts or the state.
