Student Financial Aid

Financial Aid web site

Financial aid programs have been established to help students pay the cost of attending university. Federal Pell Grants, Stafford and PLUS loans are available. Brigham Young University-Idaho does not participate in Perkins loans, SEOG grants, work study, or any other campus-based programs. Scholarships are awarded through the Admissions Office.

General Eligibility

In general, the would-be financial aid recipient must meet the following eligibility standards:

  1. Must have a high school diploma, G.E.D. certificate, or a certificate issued by the state.
  2. Must be admitted and enrolled as a regular student in an eligible program.
  3. Be a U.S. Citizen or an eligible non-citizen.
  4. The student must be making satisfactory academic progress as defined in the Policy of Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  5. Must not owe a repayment on any federal grant, and must not be in default on any federal loan received for attendance at any school.

If required, a male student must be registered with Selective Service.

HOW TO APPLY

All students applying for federal student aid, must first submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal processor. This will determine your eligibility. This Application may be obtained from your high school or at any university which participates in Federal Financial Aid. You may also apply for Federal Aid on-line which can be linked from our Financial Aid web site at http://www.byui.edu./

The FAFSA will require you to use information from your tax form and possibly your parent’s tax form if you are single. Other information such as, how many individuals are in your household, number in university, savings accounts, assets, etc. will be needed. We strongly encourage you to contact our office at (208) 496-1013, where our professional counselors are available to help with this application process.

You may also visit our web site for helpful information in completing the FAFSA. One of the questions on the application will ask to list the Title IV Code of Brigham Young University-Idaho. This number is 001625.

After your FAFSA has been sent to the federal processor, they will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR), usually within three to four weeks. The same Student Aid Report will be sent electronically to Brigham Young University-Idaho . This Student Aid Report will determine what types of aid you are eligible for.

TYPES OF AID AT BYU-IDAHO

A Federal Pell Grant is awarded by the U.S. Department of Education on the basis of financial need. The SAR you will receive will determine if you are eligible. You must be an undergraduate student who does not already have a bachelor’s degree. Pell Grants are based on your eligibility, the cost of education, the length of the enrollment period, and the number of credits carried. Pell Grants do not have to be paid back.

The Subsidized Federal Stafford Loan is need-based. The SAR will also determine if you are eligible. Principal and interest payments are postponed while you are enrolled in school at least half time and during your grace period. The federal government pays the interest for you during this time.

The Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan is not need-based. You may qualify for this program as long as your educational costs exceed the amount of financial aid awarded. Monthly principal payments are postponed while you are enrolled in school at least half time and during your grace period. You are responsible for paying the interest that accrues on your loan. You can either make interest payments or request the lender to add the accrued interest to the principal balance. This is called capitalization and increases the total amount you will repay.

An Additional Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan is available to independent students. Principal and interest terms are the same as the Unsubsidized Federal Loan.

A Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) is available for parents of dependent undergraduate students. The parent may borrow up to the student’s annual cost of attendance minus any financial assistance the student has been or will be awarded during the period of enrollment.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A STUDENT LOAN

If interested in a student loan, you must first complete the FAFSA. Be sure to answer “Yes” to the question that asks “are you interested in student loans” (question 33). If you answer “Yes” to this question, you will automatically be sent loan information within a few weeks after you submit the FAFSA. If you have any specific questions please contact our office.

DEADLINES

Priority Deadline

In order to award a student’s money on time, the Brigham Young University-Idaho Financial Aid Office would prefer the SAR information, loan request, and all other required documents to be turned in at least 2 to 3 months prior to the date you will attend Brigham Young University-Idaho. Students not meeting the Brigham Young University-Idaho deadline will not be denied aid; however, funding may not be available until later in the school year. The Financial Aid Office will not be responsible for any late fees if this deadline is not met.

Mandatory Deadlines

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The federal processor will not accept any FAFSA after July 1, 2002. We recommend that you start your FAFSA no later than 1 month before your last day of attendance.

Student Aid Report (SAR)

The correct SAR must be received electronically by Brigham Young University-Idaho by the student’s last day of enrollment.

Student Loans

Student Loans must be certified by your last day of enrollment at Brigham Young University-Idaho.

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT

Students may be assisted in locating both on- and off-campus part-time jobs.  On-campus job referrals are based on selected qualifications, availability and existing job vacancies.  Job vacancies vary widely throughout the calendar year.

During the fall and winter semesters, all jobs are extremely limited.  Any available 2-4 hour block of time between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily and willingness to accept any type of job and work any hours will greatly increase opportunity for work.  However, the very best opportunity to get on-campus jobs is during the first or second Summer terms.

Job Application Procedures:

Students are eligible for on-campus employment if they:

1.      Are full-time students taking 12 semester, 6 block, or 1 summer term credit(s).

2.      Have not yet completed 80 cumulative credits; or graduated.

3.      Are not on academic or Dean of Students probation.

Students have the option to go directly to the employers on campus for jobs or come into the Student Employment Office on the “first come, first served” basis.  Our job listings will be posted on our job board.

If students are hired by our employers, they must complete all applicable paperwork in the Student Employment Office before they can be process to work.

Federal government regulations require proof of identity and eligibility to work in the Untied States.  For a U.S. citizen this requires: 1)a U.S. passport OR 2) an original U.S. Social Security card, or certified birth certificate AND a photo I.D.

The Student Employment Office is located in room 244 of the Kimball Building.  For general information call (208) 496-2290.

BOOKSTORE

The Brigham Young University-Idaho Bookstore provides students with all necessary classroom needs and convenience items. The following tips can help in having a successful experience at the Bookstore:

Rush

You can either buy your textbooks early or use the textbook reservation system to avoid the lines during the first few days of school. Many textbooks are on the shelves up to three weeks prior to the beginning of classes.

Returns

Textbooks that are in resalable condition may be returned through the last day to add/drop classes. There is also a generous return policy on other products.

Buy Back

The Bookstore buys used books at the end of each semester during test week. The number of books bought is contingent upon the estimated course enrollments. Excess books and books not being used again on campus are bought at the same location by a wholesale book company for resale in the national market.

Check Cashing

Checks may be cashed for up to $25 over the amount of purchase. A current student ID must be presented, and student number, local address and telephone number must be clearly written on all checks. Payroll checks or large personal checks may be cashed at the Cashier's Office in the Kimball Building.

Student Charges

All registered students have a charge account set up through the Brigham Young University-Idaho Accounting Office. This charge can be used at the beginning of each semester to purchase textbooks and school supplies. The balance must be paid off within 30 days of the date of purchase. Payments are made at the Accounting Office.

Hours during Summer terms while school is in session:
9 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday.

The last appointment is taken one half hour before closing. The SHC is closed on holidays and during breaks between semesters and terms.

If a student requires health care we do not provide, a referral to a qualified physician or specialist will be arranged. Most medical specialties are available either in Rexburg or nearby Idaho Falls (30 minutes away). Madison Memorial Hospital is minutes away from Campus.

Except for prescription cards, we do not bill private insurance companies. The students are responsible for submitting the bills to their private companies. In the meantime, their student account can be charged for Health Center services. They will have 30 days before interest is charged to pay the bill. If a student has Brigham Young University-Idaho insurance and no private insurance, the adjustment in their bill is made the day of service

If a student has both Brigham Young University-Idaho insurance and private insurance, the private insurance is ALWAYS the primary coverage and must be billed before the Brigham Young University-Idaho insurance adjustments can be made.

BYU-IDAHO ACADEMIC INTERNSHIPS

An academic internship is a valuable and integral component of a BYU-Idaho education. In most cases, an academic internship is a required element of both associate and bachelor degree-seeking students.  A BYU-Idaho academic internship is a cooperative program between the university and approved Experience Providers (employers).

The purpose of an internship is to obtain practical and valuable work experience, to apply skills and knowledge learned in school, and to gain exposure to various job opportunities.  Many internships are paid experiences and typically last one academic semester in length.  Students are generally encouraged to complete a full-time academic internship.

The Internship Office located in Kimball 244 is the central location to help organize, promote, and coordinate the internship process.  The Internship Office is to help with legal problems, act as a resource center, ensure academic consistency, coordinate internship information, and assist with paperwork.  A faculty internship coordinator has also been assigned to each academic department/major to assist with the understanding and arrangement of each academic internship experience.

Listed below are general academic internship guidelines:

1)      The internship must be directly related to a student’s major or field of study.

2)      The faculty department internship coordinator, as well as the university internship director must approve the internship.

3)      The internship must be for academic credit using the 198/298/398/498 course numbers.  The faculty internship coordinator must approve academic credit.

4)      Students registering for academic internship credit must follow all registration guidelines and deadlines.

5)      Specifically defined learning objectives, Experience Provider supervision, reports, and a signed “Student Internship Agreement” between the student and the faculty department internship coordinator are necessary to qualify for internship credit.

For additional information regarding academic internships, please contact the BYU-Idaho Internship Office at 208-496-2290 or at www.internships@byui.edu.
