| CATALOG DESCRIPTION: | A basic course with emphasis on the applications of chemistry in areas of food, health, consumer products, natural and synthetic resources, energy, and environment. Designed for those majors requiring only a one-semester introduction to the modern applications of chemistry and those desiring a general education course in the physical sciences. (Offered Fall Semester and Winter Semester) | ||
| DESCRIPTION: | A basic course with emphasis on the applications of chemistry in areas of food, health, consumer products, natural and synthetic resources, energy, and environment. Designed for those majors requiring only a one-semester introduction to the modern applications of chemistry and those desiring a general education course in the physical sciences. | ||
| TOPICS: | The scientific method, the basic structure of matter, nuclear processes, acids and basis. Chemistry of the earth, air, and oceans. Consumer chemistry, including chemistry of household cleaners and over-the-counter medications. The laboratory componant gives students experience with the concepts discussed in class. | ||
| OBJECTIVES: | Introduce students to a scientific approach to problem solving. Increase students' understanding of the chemical processes in the world. Develop students' ability to be informed consumers and participants in society. | ||
| REQUIREMENTS: | Varies with instructor. Typically 4-5 exams, several quizzes, reading assignments and either an in-class presentation or a report. | ||
| PREREQUISITES: | No previous chemistry course is required. Competancy with basic mathematical operations is assumed. | ||
