| CATALOG DESCRIPTION: | Development of basic conversational-level skills, general overview of the deaf culture and current issues of interest to the deaf community. | ||
| DESCRIPTION: | SIGN 101 provides an opportunity to develop beginning conversational skills in American Sign Language and a beginning knowledge of culture, history and other topics relating to the deaf community in America. A beginning understanding of ASL grammatical structure with associated non-manual features will be incorporated. | ||
| TOPICS: | Readiness Activities. Receptive Skills. Expressive Skills. Introduction to history, culture, and range of communication systems used by the American deaf population. |

| OBJECTIVES: | Basic conversational level in receptive and expressive skills. Working knowledge of basic grammatical structures and non-manual behaviors. Working knowledge of the history, culture, and range of communication systems used by the American deaf population. |

| REQUIREMENTS: | 100% attendance. Oral Book Report. Reference Notebook. Lab for receptive skills (six hours). Final project in ASL. Student workbook (Chapters 1-12). Expressive practice outside of the classroom. |
