Writing and Reading Processes

DESCRIPTION: Exposes students to the theories and applications of the writing and reading processes. (Required for English Majors and Minors.)
TAUGHT: Winter, Summer, and Fall
CONTENT AND TOPICS: Theoretical foundations of reading and writing processes; the application of theory to an individual's reading and writing; connections among reading, writing, and critical thinking.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

  1. Relate critical theories to reading and writing processes.
  2. Understand the interrelationships among reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and language study.
  3. Integrate writing, reading, and critical thinking theories into the chosen Emphasis.
  4. Explore various reading and writing strategies.
  5. Examine how learners make meaning as they read and write.
  6. Synthesize various theories, using primary and secondary sources, and apply them to individual reading and writing processes.
  7. Explore formal and informal assessments for reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
REQUIREMENTS: An exploratory journal, synthesis papers, a documented research paper, a portfolio of representative writing, and essay exams. Requires 30 pages of critical writing. MLA documentation.
PREREQUISITES: Completion of English 251, 314, and 325.
