Focuses on evaluating, promoting, and teaching young adult literature in the public schools. (Required for Secondary Education English majors.) |

| CONTENT AND TOPICS: |
The major periods and "touchstone" authors of adolescent literature; means of reaching adolescents at their intellectual, emotional, moral, and social levels through literature; the cultural traditions of self and others. |
| GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: |
- Understand and appreciate literature as a valuable source of intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic experience reflecting and enriching the human experience.
- Read literature within such contexts as nationality, historical period, ethnicity, and culture.
- Apply appropriate critical theories to literary texts.
- Continue developing library skills for literary research and document formal writing according to MLA guidelines.
- Integrate secondary texts into written work.

| REQUIREMENTS: |
Extensive reading, discussion, and oral presentations. Interpretive and analytical papers totaling 15 pages. MLA documentation. |
