| DESCRIPTION: | Jazz Improvisation 2 is the second of a two-part sequence. The two semesters combined will cover the basic concepts necessary to play and teach the fundamentals of jazz improvisation. Emphasis is on jazz theory and ear training, articulation and style, listening and transcription, and their application to performance. | ||

| GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: | 1. Develop and demonstrate fundamental skills in jazz articulation and phrasing through analysis, transcription, and teacher instruction of basic jazz performance tendencies. 2. Develop and demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the theoretical aspects of improvisation. 3. Analyze chord symbols and construct improvisatory jazz scales and patterns. 4. Develop and demonstrate through hands-on experience the physical and intellectual skills necessary to perform appropriate melodic lines over complex chord progressions. 5. Establish specialized practice habits and develop skills for ear-training indicative to the needs of the jazz performer/educator through in and out of class exercises and through transcription. |

| REQUIREMENTS: | 2 transcriptions selected from Latin, contemporary, ballad, or fusion styles, scale and chord memorization, listening, blues in 12 keys, blues piano voicings, tune learning and application, improvisation. | ||
| PREREQUISITES: | All students must have completed Jazz Improvisation 1 with a C grade or higher or obtained permission from the instructor. | ||
| OTHER: | Improvisation is the core of jazz. All students who wish to participate in jazz should take Jazz Improvisation 1 and 2. | ||
