| DESCRIPTION: | A study of structure, reactivity patterns, and bond theory as applied to inorganic chemistry. Topics covered will include periodic relationships, group theory, molecular orbital and valence bond approaches to bonding, solid-state chemistry, and organometallic chemistry. | ||

| CONTENT AND TOPICS: | Atomic theory and chemical bonding; symmetry and group theory; acid-base concepts; solid-state structures and concepts; structure and reactivity of coordingation (including organometallic) complexes; bioinorganic chemistry; instrumental techniques utilized in inorganic chemistry; and molecular orbital calculations. | ||
| GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: | Gain a solid foundation of principles and topics most relevant to inorganic chemistry that may include the following: 1) Atomic theory and chemical bonding. 2) Symmetry and group theory. 3) Acid-base concepts. 4) Solid state structures and concepts. 5) Structure and reactivity of coordination complexes containing transition metals. 6) Structure and reactivity of organometallic complexes. 7) Bioinorganic chemistry. Emphasize molecular orbitals and the use of symmetry and group theory. Understand and communicate in the "inorganic chemical language". Understand common instrumental techniques in inorganic chemistry. Incorporate molecular modeling software to understand bonding in coordination compounds. |

| REQUIREMENTS: | 3 hours of lecture per week; 3 exams; 1 final; homework as assigned; and a technical presentation on an instrumental technique. | ||
