The Department of Landscape Horticulture prepares students for expanding career opportunities in horticulture. Graduates with associate degrees find immediate employment with nurseries, garden centers, florist shops, landscape contractors, lawn service companies, interiorscape companies, greenhouses, golf courses, parks and horticulture supply companies. Because demand for graduates is increasing, salaries are increasing and most students can choose from several job offers.
Production of horticultural crops such as trees, turf, flowers, interior plants, vegetables and fruits offers additional career opportunities.
Students who continue on for Bachelors and more advanced degrees find opportunities in horticulture teaching, research, extension education and government service. Horticulture training is also an excellent entry into related fields such as forestry, land conservation, landscape architecture, urban planning, biotechnology, plant pathology and irrigation engineering.
The Department is a recognized leader in horticulture education having an excellent faculty and facilities, including five greenhouses, laboratories, arboretum, and demonstration gardens.
Courses which develop skills in home gardening and landscape beautification are available to the general student body. These courses (Horticulture 124, 125, 130, 135, 201 and 299 ) make it possible for students to become more self-sufficient in beautifying their homes and communities.
The ultimate goal of students entering the Landscape Horticulture Management and Floral Design Management programs should be management and/or business ownership. These 20 month programs consist of four semesters on campus and two summer terms to complete ten weeks of internship in a horticulture business located in a geographical region chosen by the student, plus one summer term of five weeks studying on campus.
Degrees Offered:
1. Associate in Landscape Horticulture Management. This program prepares students
for careers in retail nursery sales, landscape design, landscape installation, landscape
maintenance and golf course and park maintenance. Classes transfer for university credit,
but may not fulfill all General Education requirements.
2. Associate in Floral Design Management. The Floral Design Management program prepares students for employment in the retail florist, interior landscape and retail greenhouse industry. Upon graduation students are qualified floral designers and have training leading to flower shop management. Classes transfer for university credit, but may not fulfill all General Education requirements.
3. Associate in Arts and Sciences with General Horticulture Major. This is a transfer program preparing students for more advanced training at a 4-year college or university. It includes all the General Education Requirements but fewer major courses.
Entrance Requirement
The floral design program has enrollment limitations. Students who are admitted to the
college and indicate intention to major in floral design will automatically be considered
based upon: scholastic record (high school/ college transcript), ACT scores, relevant
course work, and date of application.A grade point average of 2.5 must be maintained in
order to continue in this major.
