Influencing people’s lives for the better is one of the satisfactions of teaching. Education, above all other professions, allows you to share yourself with others as you help them grow, learn, mature and identify that which will have a lasting impact for good throughout their lives.

The Elementary Education Department offers an Associate Degree in Arts and Sciences with a major in Elementary Education. The major prepares students to transfer to a four–year university where they may specialize in Elementary Education, Special Education or Early Childhood Education. Students should complete all General Education requirements and 18-20 credits from the recommended Education class list, including the four required Elementary Education courses.

The Elementary Education Department is teaching its courses in connection with Brigham Young University. The department course numbers and the support courses for the department are BYU numbers and descriptions to facilitate transfer to the universities. The courses will appear on a BYU transcript and as transfer credit on a Ricks transcript. When students apply for admission to a university, it will be necessary for him/her to ask that transcripts from both BYU and Ricks College be sent to the transfer university.

Elementary Education is a four–year public school certification program. Transfer to a four–year university is required to complete the program. Those students only interested in preschool education should contact the Family Science Department.

The Elementary Education Department does not offer an Associate Degree in Secondary Education. Students interested in teaching at this level should major in the specific subject area they intend to teach and certify during their junior and senior years.

Entrance Requirements
Students interested in Elementary Education should declare General Studies-Advised in Education as their initial major (the major code is 300), ElEd 100 (Introduction to Education) should be taken during the freshman year. Students may officially declare an Elementary Education Major when they have: 1) completed ElEd 100 with a “P” grade ; 2) achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better (Minimum of 28 credits); and 3) completed a matriculation form available in the Elementary Education Department secretary’s office (Smith 350). Matriculation may begin during the Freshman year. All Elementary Education majors must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better while at Ricks. Students who fall below 2.75 will automatically be dropped from the program.

It is possible to petition for acceptance into the Department of Elementary Education if your GPA is between 2.5 and 2.75. A committee from the department will review the petition and make a decision concerning acceptance. A personal interview may be included in the petition procedure.

Students who do not meet the matriculation requirements for the Department of Elementary Education after two semesters should meet with their advisors about possible options for continuing their education.

Contact with universities concerning which classes to take at Ricks is ultimately the responsibility of the individual student.
