The Department of Welding Engineering Technology offers instructions in the techniques of welding. Students are taught to recognize and understand the processes involved. Why do certain temperatures affect the welding process differently? What are the chemical, physical, or metallurgical rules behind each process? Intelligent decision making is taught in terms of material usage and of the variables in processing. Jobs are always available for people who understand this type of information in addition to their actual skills.

This Associate Degree in Welding Engineering Technology is designed as a transfer program. It provides hands-on training in the Welding processes and skills, leading to Welder Certification. This program also provides a solid foundation in Welding Theory, Metallurgy, Welding Examination, Quality Control, Math, Physics, Chemistry and Computers.

This program is for the student who wants to enter the welding industry well trained and ready for this challenging and rewarding career. This course is hands-on and labor intensive. You will receive instruction and extensive training using the latest weldingtechnics on modern, up-to-date welding equipment. You will be trained in SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW. This program also includes robotic welding, automatic thermal cutting, repair and maintenance welding.
Our goals include having you certified in pipe and plate and able to fit and weld in all positions.
For the best sequence and successful completion of the certificate program register as listed below. For students interested in running their own business we recommend a fourth semester of 15-18 credits with classes taken from the suggested classes for proprietors list.

A general Welding course which includes Oxyacetylene welding, Oxyfuel Cutting (OFC),
Shielded Metal Arc welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc welding (GMAW), Flux Core Arc welding
(FCAW), Carbon Arc Cutting (CAC) in the flat and horizontal positions and includes the
safety procedures, electrode identification and focuses on theory and practice. Four
credits for flat and horizontal position with three credits for flat only. (Fall and
Winter)
Weld 117 Repair and Maintenance Welding 2
Prerequisite: Weld 105 or consent of instructor
One hour lecture; two hours lab/week
Lab Fee: $20 to partially cover material costs
Welding techniques, principles, theory, and practices used in the repair and maintenance
of equipment. Includes brazing, bronze welding, arc welding, carbon arc gouging, flux core
arc welding, and surfacing and its alloys. The study of the physical and mechanical
properties, as well as chemical composition of the materials to be repaired will be
included. (Winter)
Weld 123 Advanced SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW 3
Prerequisite: Weld 105 or concurrent enrollment
Two hours lecture; four hours lab/week
Lab Fee: $20 to partially cover material costs
Advanced pre-employment training which emphasizes developing manipulative proficiency in
the use of SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW in the vertical and overhead positions in light and heavy
gauge plate for the welding industry. (Fall)
Weld 127 GTA Welding CS/SS 4
Prerequisite: Weld 123 or permission of instructor
Two hours lecture; four hours lab/week
Lab Fee: $20 to partially cover material costs
Gas Tungsten Arc welding of carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum and other alloys
(titanium, nickel alloys and magnesium and copper used in the welding industry). Includes
the study of their physical and mechanical properties and chemical compositions and
weldability. Welding will be done in all positions. (Winter)
Weld 210 Blue Print Reading and Sketching for Welders 2
Two hours lecture; one hour lab/week
Sketching, blue print and welding symbol interpretation, plate and pipe layout
measurement, bills of materials, dimensioning, notes and specifications, and abbreviations
used in fabrication.
Weld 218 Welding Fabrication 2-3
Prerequisite: Weld 105
Two hours lecture; four hours lab/week
Lab Fee: $20 to partially cover material costs
The use and application of equipment, tools, fasteners, and processes used in fabrication
practices in the welding industry. Interpretation of plans for the actual fabrication of
small projects. Techniques for layout, fitting, squaring, tacking, and fabricating will be
developed. (Winter)
Weld 221 Advanced Fabrication 2-3
Prerequisite: Weld 105, Weld 218
Two hours lecture; four hours lab/week
Lab Fee: $20 to partially cover material costs
Advanced pre-employment training used in the fabrication industry. The interpretation of
drawing and symbols for the actual fabrication of large projects. Techniques for layout,
fitting, squaring, tacking, welding, and fabricating will be practiced. (Fall)
Weld 225 Pipe and Tube Welding 4
Prerequisite: Weld 105, 123 127 or concurrent enrollment
Two hours lecture; six hours lab/week
Lab Fee: $20 to partially cover material costs
A variety of material and configurations using SMAW, GTAW and FCAW processes on
subcritical pipe welding, critical pipe welding (pressure and power systems, cross country
transmission pipeline) and water transmission pipe. The welding will be accomplished in
the 1g, 2g, 5g, 6g, and 6gR positions using carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum
pipe. (Fall)
Weld 229 Certification and Code Welding 3
Prerequisite: Weld 105, Weld 123, Weld 127, Weld 225 or concurrent enrollment
Two hours lecture; four hours lab/week
Lab Fee: $20 to partially cover material costs
Welding to AWS, API, and ASME codes to meet the entry level employment standards for Code
work. Training in the procedures using SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW processes for
qualification of welders in all positions on plate, pipe and rebar. May be taken more than
once. A qualification test will be given at end of course by a qualified Certified Welding
Testing Lab. (Fall)
Weld 250 Welding Equipment Maintenance and Service 2
Two hours lecture; one hour lab/week
A study of the theory, application, and practices used in maintenance of welding equipment
used in the Welding industry. (Fall)
Weld 254 Pipe Fitting and Cutting 2
Prerequisite: Weld 105
Two hours lecture; two hours lab/week
Lab Fee: $20 to partially cover material costs
Pipe fitting, measurements, patterns, marking, and layout tool use needed in the pipe
welding industry. Techniques of fitting, layout, cutting saddles, and TKY branches will be
practiced. (Winter)
Weld 256 Automated Welding Processes 3
Prerequisite: Weld 105, 123, 127, 210 or concurrent enrollment
Two hours lecture; two hours lab/week
A survey of the automated welding processes and their applications used within
todays welding industry. (Panograph, Robotics, Sub-Arc, Etc.) Field trips and
hands-on learning will be used. (Winter)
Weld 258 Non-Destructive Testing and Inspection 2
Prerequisite: Weld 105, 123, 127, 225 or concurrent enrollment
Two hours lecture; two hours lab/week
Theory and application of non-destructive testing systems. Techniques for quality control.
Includes magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, leak, visual and ultrasonic testing. (Fall)
Weld 290 Special Projects 1-3
Prerequisite: Consent of the Department Chair
Weld 298 Welding Technology Work Experience 1-3
Prerequisite: Consent of the Department Chair
Work experience with selected welding firms. Work period may be arranged during regular
semesters. An acceptable written report on the organization and the work done will be
required.
