The Department of Foreign Languages offers students the opportunity to develop language and cultural skills in French, German, Russian, and Spanish. Although we offer an Associate Degree in each of these languages, our greater role is to strengthen the general education and intercultural understanding of our students.
Students majoring in other disciplines often increase their future career opportunities by gaining a working knowledge of a foreign language and broadening their cultural horizons.
Many universities to which our students transfer have a foreign language requirement, either for entrance or for graduation, and many departments at all universities have a language requirement, especially for advanced degrees.
BYU graduation requirements include math or a foreign language class above the 201 level in order to graduate. This requirement can be fully completed at Ricks in all four languages. Because the requirement involves a four-semester sequence, it must be begun during the first semester of the first year unless the student has studied that language previously. Students with prior language study or experience should contact a member of the language department for help in selecting classes.
Credit by special exam is available for returned missionaries in most languages, but not for native speakers of those languages. Exams are usually given in November and March. For information contact the Foreign Language secretary during the school year (September-April). Phone: (208) 356-1501.
