Departmental Office (208) 356-2009
The Department of Biology has designed courses that address the needs of students in all three major areas of study at Ricks College. For those who are in the General Education program, biology courses will satisfy the requirements for graduation; for those who choose to study biology outside of their major, classwork will allow them to acquire knowledge which can assist them in the raising and teaching of their families. Those with majors that stress the biological sciences, as well as other students, will find that the Department of Biology provides the very best training possible in undergraduate study.
Due to the increased stress on science expressed in the continuing national debate about quality education, students are encouraged to explore the biological sciences, even where it is outside of their major interest.
Elective courses in these subjects give credit toward graduation and also transfer credit to other institutions. General Education requirements include eight to nine hours of classwork in the Natural Sciences. Of these, four can be satisfied in Biology.
For those who have the majors listed below, recommended course work will
be listed on the following pages, however, students are encouraged to plan their program
with the aid of an advisor:
Biology Education, Botany, Ecology, Genetics, Marine Biology, Medical Technology,
Microbiology, Pre-Dental Hygiene, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Forestry and Pre-Range Science,
Pre-Medicine, Pre-Optometry, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Physician Assistant, Pre-Veterinary
Medicine, Range Management, Wildlife Management and Zoology.
Biology students majoring in other areas of biology may graduate with an Associate in Arts and Sciences Degree with a major in General Education Natural Sciences.
Since the curricula for these majors varies with programs and prospective transfer schools, students are urged to write to transfer institutions for catalogs and guidance. The General Education requirements and advisor consultations will determine graduation requirements at Ricks College.

If you do not have sufficient high school background to begin as outlined above, you will not be able to complete the courses in two years but may still be able to graduate. Register as suggested and see an advisor as soon as possible after arriving at Ricks College.
Math Courses:
Math 110 Coll Algebra 3
Math 111 Trigonometry 2
Math background: If you have not had sufficient high school math to succeed in Math 110, College Algebra, then you should enroll in either Math 100 or Math 101. See the catalog for specifics.
Note: It is possible that you may have completed courses equivalent to Math 110 College Algebra in high school. If so you may wish to bypass it.
Chemistry background: You should have completed or be enrolled in Math 110 College Algebra before taking Chemistry 105 General College Chemistry. It is recommended you have a high school course in chemistry or take Chem 101 before you take Chemistry 105.
Physics background: You should have completed Math 111 Trigonometry before enrolling in Physics 105 Intro Applied Physics.
A degree in either microbiology or medical technology requires at least four academic years to complete. Ricks College offers the course work required by most universities during the first two years, but you must go elsewhere to complete the degree. It is to your advantage to decide upon the institution from which you intend to get your degree as schools do differ in some specific classes. An advisor at Ricks will be able to help you in choosing equivalent courses.

Courses for Majors
The above schedule prepares a student with a GPA of 3.8 or better to enter vet school after 2 years of college.
Note: Colorado State and Washington State Vet school will accept students after 2 years of college.
Students who want to take 3-4 years pre-vet medicine may choose a slightly different curriculum, but the above classes will need to be taken before they enter vet school.
If at the end of the 1st semester or 1st year your GPA is not 3.8 or better, you should probably look at other possibilities.
Math Background:
No HS math: take Math 100 B & C;
1 year HS algebra: take Math 101;
2 years HS Algebra, take Math 110.
Chemistry Background:
No HS Chem take Chem 101;
1 year HS Chem take Chem 105.
If either of the above options are selected, it will require the student 3-4 years to complete pre-vet requirements.
Colorado State requires Math 221

A degree in either Marine biology or Zoology requires at least four academic years to complete. Ricks College offers the course work required by most universities during the first two years, but you must go elsewhere to complete the degree. It is to your advantage to decide upon the institution from which you intend to get your degree as schools do differ in some specific classes.
