The Ricks College Automotive Department prepares students to enter one of the largest and far-reaching service businesses that affects virtually every household. The opportunities in this field have never been better as the complexity of the automobile removes many operations and procedures from the realm of the do-it-yourself amateur technician. This results in a good demand for well trained, honest and progressive individuals, whether it be in the technical, automotive technology, teaching or business fields.

Students may earn an Automotive Repair Business Management Degree or either of the two transfer program options allowing them to transfer to a four year college or university to fulfill the requirements for a Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive Technology or teaching. The department has coordinated its curriculum to allow for easy transfer to area schools. Most classes are available on an elective basis to provide owner-driver preventative maintenance and general automotive repair skills to the general student.

The Automotive Program is housed in the Mark Austin Engineering and Technology building, one of the finest facilities for automotive repair education available. It includes four laboratories, each furnished with quality testing and diagnostic equipment. The program reinforces diagnostic and repair skills by working on customer vehicles. Students may enter this program either fall or winter semesters.

Special Costs: A lab fee of $60 per sem-ester covering coveralls, shop towels and cleaning fee is required of all auto majors. $25 is refundable upon return of towels and coveralls. The student is encouraged to buy and use his own tools, tool vendors will offer substantial discounts for student tool kits. The department has a limited number of modest tool kits available for rent to the students at a very reasonable cost and deposit. Early reservation will assure a kit for the student who desires to rent his tools. The deposit is $40 per semester for the basic set, of which $30 is refundable upon return of the intact set. Students are required to replace lost tools. A limited number of larger 2nd year kits are available to sophomores for a $100 deposit per semester of which $75 is refundable. Students in the Repair Business major will be expected to furnish their own tools by the end of the first year as they prepare for the internship.

Minimum G.P.A. Requirements: To qualify for graduation from the Automotive Program, students must achieve at least a "C" grade in every class.
