The Art Department's programs are designed to provide a balanced foundation experience and build valuable skills in fine art, graphic design, illustration and photo-graphy, preparing students to successfully transfer to a university or art school or enter the job market.Classes are also offered that fill the Arts requirement of General Education.

NOTE:
1. A minimum GPA of 2.7 in major courses is required for an Art degree. No D credit will be accepted.
2. Art Seminar is required every semester while enrolled as an art major.
3. Art majors must select Art 103 as their GE Requirement in the Arts Category.


Associate in Arts and Sciences with a major in Fine Arts (145)

This degree is designed to provide a broad foundation in the visual arts for the purpose of transferring into advance programs or lifelong personal creative and artistic enrichment.

Art 103* Introduction to the Visual Arts 3

Three hours per week
An art appreciation class surveying the ideas, materials, and history of the visual arts, including painting, sculpture, architecture and film.

Art 201* Art History I 3

Three hours per week
A survey of art from Prehistoric to Renaissance. Includes criteria for appreciating ancient art and its relationship to modern civilization.

Art 202* Art History II 3
No prerequisite
Three hours per week
A survey of art from Renaissance to Modern, with an emphasis on art in its political, social and religious context.

Art 210 Introduction to Computer Imaging 1
Prerequisite: Art 110 (Art majors) Photo 105 (Photo majors)
An introduction to Macintosh-based imaging software for students of various visual disciplines. Computer basics, image input, retouching and image composing will be reviewed.

Art 211H* Art and Philosophy I 3
Three hours per week

The development of art styles from ancient times to the Renaissance, as those styles relate to the philosophy of each period. Includes criteria for evaluating works of art.

Drawing

Art 110 Basic Drawing 3
Prerequisite: Enrolled as an Art major or consent of instructor (some Art 110 classes are available for non art majors)
Fundamentals of perspective, structural drawing, light and shade and basic composition.

Art 115 Figure Drawing 3

Proportion, structure, composition and various media will be introduced for interpreting and depicting the human figure.

Painting

Survey and application of various tech-niques of traditional transparent watercolor painting with an introduction to other materials, such as egg tempera and acrylic. Estimated cost for materials: $60

Exploration of various contemporary visual communications within graphic design, illustration, and photography. Traditional and contemporary problem solving. Estimated cost for materials: $80.

Introduction to typography as the fundamental element of graphic design. An overview of the classification of fonts and the structure and creative use of typography. Estimated cost for materials: $60.

Sculpture

Introduction to the basic processes of sculpture: modeling, casting and assembling, with an emphasis on the human figure.

Development of technical and design skills introduced in Sculpture I for individual expression within a chosen area.

Art 160 Ceramics I 3

An introduction to the ceramic processes of handbuilding, wheel throwing, decorating, and glazing, with an emphasis upon individual creative expression. Estimated cost of materials over basic fee: $25 to $75.

Art 260 Ceramics II 3
Prerequisites: Art 160 or permission of instructor.

Development of technical and design skills as introduced in Ceramics I. Emphasis on individual expression within a chosen area. Estimated cost of materials over basic fee: $25 to $75.


Illustration

Art 270 Media for Illustration 3
Prerequisites: Art 110 and 120
Six hours per week
Application of various media, such as pencil, ink, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, egg tempera, scratch board, dyes, cut paper, computers, etc. Estimated cost for materials: $60.

Art 275 Illustrative Drawing 3
Prerequisites: Art 110, 115, 120 and 215.
Six hours per week
**This course may be repeated for an additional 3 credits.
Explores creative drawing styles used by the illustrator and fine art student. Various media used. Reviews basic figure drawing and moves into costumed models and fashion illustration. Estimated cost for materials: $30.

This will require specific assignments related to the places visited. The topics to be studied and number of credits available and costs vary dependent upon destination and duration of travel.

Guest Artist fee: $10
A guest artist program designed to introduce students to a variety of artists and designers. Students are encouraged to interact with the artist during a question and answer session. Usually three to six guest artists are invited per semester.

For sophomore students who want to independently pursue a direction in art or photography under the supervision of an instructor.


Photography

Aesthetic principles are discovered using the photographic medium. This class is required for all photography majors.

Photo 180 Intermediate B&W Photography 3
Prerequisite: Art 105

An introduction to the "Zone System" with continued emphasis toward developing an aesthetic approach to photography. Film, paper, chemicals and related materials will be provided.

Photo 280 Introduction to Color Photography 3
Prerequisite: Art 105C
Five hours per week
Supplies Fee: $50
Color slides are used to explore the principles of color. Color film, chemicals and presentation equipment will be provided.

Photo 285 Introduction to Commercial Photography 3
Prerequisite: Art 105C
Five hours per week
Supplies Fee: $45
Architectural subjects will be utilized to learn the operating principles of the view camera. Also covers studio lighting and illustrative photographic techniques. Film, paper, chemicals, studio space, lighting, and a 4X5 large format camera will be available.

Photo 287 Studio Portrait Photography 3
Prerequisite: Two semesters of Photography
Five hours per week
Supplies Fee: $60
Intensive study of portrait lighting and posing. Color film, paper, chemicals, studio space, lighting equipment and medium format cameras will be available.

*Gives GE credit in the Arts area of the Arts & Letters requirement

**Repeatable class: May be repeated only for elective credit and may not be accepted by other institutions. If repeating to change a grade, application for that grade change must be made at the registrar's office.
