The Ricks College Music Department is a Community/Junior College member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
The Department is housed in one of the most beautiful and well-equipped facil-ities for the performing arts anywhere in the world. The faculty and facilities have made Ricks nationally recognized as a superior choice for the serious student of music at the undergraduate level. In addition, the Department offers an unusual diversity of opportunity for the general student to develop skills in instrumental or vocal performance, as well as to increase understanding through a wide range of musical opportunities.
Degrees with a number of specialized options are offered that will prepare students to continue their Baccalaureate preparations in music theory, per-formance, music education, music therapy, piano pedagogy and many other music related careers. A two-year degree in piano teaching is offered for the student who plans to teach in the home after graduation from Ricks College.
Musical Organizations: Ricks College is proud of its orchestras, bands, and choirs. The Symphony Orchestra is the only all-student symphony orchestra at any junior college in the United States, and the Chamber Orchestra provides exceptional opportunities for highly talented string students to further develop their talents. The bands are noted for a tradition of excellence, and the choirs have developed an enviable reputation for beautiful choral sound. Students may select from a variety of musical organizations that range from Symphony Orchestra and Concert Chorale to Jazz Ensemble. Athletic events, dances, concerts and other campus events are enriched by the variety of music performance groups. Non-music majors are encouraged to audition and participate in these groups.
Student participation in performing groups is limited to 12 rehearsal/contact hours per week.
Auditions: Auditions for all Music Department groups will be held September 1 and 2 in the Eliza R. Snow Center for the Performing Arts and the popular music studio under the grandstand. In addition, vocal students are encouraged to audition August 27, 28, 29, and 31.
These auditions also serve as pre-auditions for admission to music degree programs. The admissions audition is the M159 jury at the end of the first semester.
Music Lessons: Music lessons are available on all standard instruments and for voice. Instruction is offered through master class lessons. Fifty-two instructors, including full-time faculty and part-time specialists, provide training at every level of proficiency from the beginner to the pre-professional. Entering freshmen music majors should register for Music 159. Non-music majors should register for Music 158.

Prerequisites: It is assumed that all music majors will have had extensive previous training in music. They will be tested as entering freshmen to determine basic musical skills. Students will be designated prospective music majors until they have successfully completed Music 195 with a grade of C- or better and have been accepted for M160 or M260 on their major instrument. Piano proficiency is required at the level of easy piano accompaniment. Those not meeting this requirement must take M156, M157, piano skills, or M158, piano lessons.
Juries: Each semester all music majors enrolled in Music 159, 160 or 260 must stand a jury exam. Final grades and achievement levels are determined at these juries. To be on track as a Music major the student must pass at the level that corresponds to the semester of study. i.e. first semester must pass at level I, second semester must pass at level II, third semester must pass at level III and fourth semester at level IV. In order to graduate in performance, education, therapy, or pedagogy programs a student must achieve level IV. Majors with the Liberal Arts Option or the Music Business Option need stand only one jury. They need three semesters of Music 158 or higher and one semester of Music 159.
Performance: Music majors will be expected to perform solo or chamber music in public performance for a minimum of 25 minutes during their two years at Ricks College. Regularly scheduled afternoon recitals and other performance opportunities are available for student performers. The performance requirement is usually met by combining several solo students in small group recitals. Individual performances exceeding twenty minutes are discouraged. Exception may be granted only by the department chairman.
Listening Requirements: Music majors must attend 10 live concerts each semester. This is reported through Music 149, Concert Attendance.
Piano Proficiency Requirement: A basic level of piano skill is required of all Music majors. Music majors are required to pass Music 118 Piano Proficiency or to register for Music 156 Piano Skills their first semester in residence.
The piano proficiency requirement consists of the following:
1. Play simple four-part hymns (from Hymns 1985 or equivalent).
2. Play an allegro movement from a simple sonatina by Beethoven or Clementi (or
equivalent).
3. Play a simple two-part piece such as a minuet from the Anna Magdalena Bach book.
4. Sight read a simple melody and a chordal accompaniment.
Placement in piano proficiency is made at the Music Department orientation the day before the first day of classes. The music major who is unable to pass the piano proficiency requirement at that time is is required to take Music 156 and Music 157, Basic Piano Skills or Music 158 Applied Piano lesson beginning the first semester. It is required that the Piano proficiency requirement be passed as a prerequisite to Music 291 Keyboard Harmony.
