Glossary


Adobe - The software developer of InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, among others.


Advertising - The public promotion of a product or event.


Approval - A Communication Council representative must approve all communication pieces before being displayed on or off campus. To get approval, click here: Get Approval


Branding - A name, term, sign, symbol or design that identifies a seller. Branding differentiates one company's product from other sellers. Consider one of your favorite products. What emotions or memories are connected to the product? These emotions and perceptions are the brand of the product.


Campaign - A coordinated set of individual advertisements over a period of time that shares a single idea. An advertisement campaign might involve placing multiple posters in buildings and distributing fliers over several days to promote an upcoming event.


CMYK - An acronym for cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black). Generally all printed communication pieces should use CMYK color mode. If you are using University Press, you should use CMYK color mode.


Communication Council - A group of representatives from all departments, colleges and offices on campus. This council meets regularly to discuss important communication related issues, and is responsible for reviewing all forms of communication on campus. This group approves Level 1 and Level 2 communication pieces, campus-wide campaigns, and exception to policy communication items.


Communication Council Representatives - Individuals selected to represent the various entities involved with communication on campus. The primary responsibilities of the representatives are to discuss relevant issues, bring perspective and advice regarding current projects, and to assist in communication piece approvals.

Communication Piece - An advertisement such as poster, flier, Library screen saver, or banner.


Creative Services - BYU-Idaho's professional graphic services.


Fonts - Also known as typefaces, the official fonts for BYU-Idaho are Minion Pro and News Gothic. Times New Roman and Arial may substitute when the official fonts are unavailable.


i-Comm Alloy Advertising - A student-led organization that provides clients with a variety of professional design solutions.


Identity - How people perceive a product or a brand. By consistently using the approved templates and logos you can help build the brandidentityof BYU-Idaho both on and off campus.


InDesign - A publishing program that can be used to create posters, fliers, and brochures. All templates come in InDesign file format.


Innuendo - Any image or word play that has subtle or indirect meaning. Avoid words or images that have inappropriate meanings in popular culture.


JPG - A common file type that produces generally smaller file sizes.


Logo - Sometimes referred to as a "signature," a logo is made up of the BYU-Idaho logo along with the name of the department, office or program.


Official Type Faces - The official typefaces for BYU-Idaho are Minion Pro and News Gothic. Times New Roman and Arial may substitute when the official typefaces are unavailable.


PDF - A self-contained file commonly used for electronic file transfer and printing.


Photoshop - A graphics editing program used for image manipulation.


Pixel - The tiny squares that make up a digital image. Pixels can be seen when a photo is enlarged too much, and can make your photo look blocky.


PPI of Digital Images - PPI means pixels per inch. A computer screen displays images at 72PPI. For an image to look good when printed, it needs to be at least 225PPI (300PPI is best and should be your target).


Publisher - An entry-level desktop publishing program made by Microsoft, used for page layout and design. All templates come in Publisher file format.


Resolution - Image resolution describes the detail an image holds. Higher resolution means more image detail.


RGB - Is an acronym for red, green, and blue. Image files can be saved with different color settings. Generally RGB color is for display on screen. Library screen saver advertisements and my.byui banners should use RGB color settings.


Template - Creative Services has created outlines for most communication pieces —including posters, brochures, fliers, etc,—that are available to download. These templates are the approved size and design for display and only require your image. All templates come in InDesign and Publisher formats.


University Press - A professional on-campus print shop. University Press offers a wide variety of printing services to meet the needs of BYU-Idaho faculty, staff and students.
